Adobe unveils CS6 and subscription-based Creative Cloud service, up for pre-order now (video)

adobe creative cloud cs6

Adobe's biggest day of 2012? Go ahead, don't be afraid to call it what it (probably) is. For starters, the outfit is introducing Creative Suite 6 to the world in formal fashion, with 14 applications either unveiled or refreshed. Photoshop CS6 is graduating from beta -- seeing an update that'll provide "near instant results" thanks to the Mercury Graphics Engine -- while Content-Aware Patch and Content-Aware Move are sure to please artists suffering from the "Surely you can fix this in post!" clientele backlash. Adobe Muse is happily entering the scene for the first time, described as a "radical tool that'll enables designers to create and publish HTML5 web sites without writing code." (We're still waiting for Flash to comment.)

In related news, those who aren't up for paying $1,299 (and up) for one of the new suites can try something a bit different: monthly installments. That's coming courtesy of Creative Cloud, an quasi-new initiative designed to harness the power of cloud-based app distribution and streaming in a way that'll make CS6 more accessible than any of the packs that came before. You can tap into CS6's amenities over your broadband connection for $74.99 per month, while those who agree to an annual subscription can get in for $49.99 per month. To be clear, that provides unbridled access to any CS6 tool: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and AfterEffects, and the rest of the gang. If you're jonesing for Photoshop alone, that one will be available for $29.99 per month month (no contract) or $19.99 per month (annual agreement). There's no set release date just yet, but we're told to expect the new goods "within 30 days," and pre-orders seem to be a go. Head on down to the source links for more details on each individual aspect, and catch a promo video for the cloud-based subscription offering just after the break.

Dollars, Sense, And 40 Billion Facebook Credits

facebook creditsRoughly 16 billion Facebook Credits were distributed and consumed in 2011. In 2012, I predict that the use of Facebook Credits will soar by three times to over 40 billion Credits spent on virtual goods, digital goods and more. The growth will be fueled by new digital content available on Facebook, use of Facebook Credits to reward brand loyalty and better marketing of a social currency that is still in its infancy. The following chart shows the growth of Facebook Credits revenue reported by Facebook from 2009 to 2011.

IMF announces $430 billion to boost resources

(AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The International Monetary Fund says it has raised more than $430 billion in an effort to assure finance markets that it has sufficient firepower to handle any new problems from Europe's prolonged debt crisis.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde announced the new figure at the conclusion of the discussions among finance officials of the Group of 20 major economic powers on Friday. She said that some countries including Russia, India, China and Brazil had made private pledges but did not want to issue public commitments until they had conferred with officials in their home capitals.

But she said when the public and private commitments were combined, the total raised would exceed $430 billion, nearly doubling the IMF's available resources to make loans to nations in trouble.

Lagarde called the fundraising a "huge effort" that would increase the current $485 billion in funds available for loans to a figure above $1 trillion.

"We have the necessary tools in the tool box and we will use this wisely," she told reporters at a news conference wrapping up discussions among finance ministers and central bank governors of the G-20 countries. The group includes traditional economic powers such as the United States and Germany and emerging powers such as China and Brazil.

The United States was represented in the talks by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Lagarde said the extra resources would create to the stability of the global economy. Finance officials hope that the sizable increase in IMF resources will reassure financial markets that there will be a backstop should another, larger European country get into trouble in repaying its government debts.

Already three European nations ? Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? have been forced to accept IMF rescue packages along with sizable bailout support from other nations using the euro currency. But the concern is that Spain and Italy, much larger economies, are now facing economic difficulties. If either of those nations needed rescue packages, the costs would be far higher than what has been raised so far.

The fund raising effort exposed splits inside the 188-nation IMF. The United States and Canada refused to participate in boosting the IMF's resources, seeking to keep pressure on Europe to do more.

And the four countries that did not publicly reveal their contributions ? China, Russia, India and Brazil ? all expressed reservations about pledging additional resources until the IMF implements a 2010 agreement to give emerging market nations more of a say in how the IMF operates. There are doubts whether the deal to boost the voting power of China and other emerging countries can be achieved by the deadline of the fall meetings of the IMF.

Secret Service: 3 more agents out, 12th in trouble

Greg Stokes and David Chaney have both left their jobs in the wake of the Colombia prostitution scandal. NBC News' Kristen Welker reports.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

Updated at 6:53 p.m. ET: A 12th Secret Service agent is under investigation in the Colombian prostitution scandal, the agency said Friday. Meanwhile, three more agents resigned and one was cleared of "serious" misconduct.

The agency had previously announced the resignation of one agent and the retirement of another in connection with the procurement of women during President Barack Obama's trip to Cartagena, Colombia, last week. A third was listed to be fired.

In a statement Friday evening, the agency confirmed a report by NBC News' Kristen Welker that the inquiry had expanded to include a 12th agent. Like the 11 others, the agent was placed on administrative leave and stripped of their security clearances, it said.

One of those was cleared of "serious misconduct" but faces undisclosed "administrative action," it said, meaning five agents remained under active investigation after Friday's dust had settled.

Photos have emerged of the Colombian prostitute at the center of the Secret Service sex scandal. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan briefed Obama on the investigation earlier in the day, a White House official said. Sullivan has been praised by some lawmakers for his forthrightness and quick action in the case and still has some support in Congress, but "these things can turn on a dime," an official said.

The unfolding scandal has prompted the agency to review its policies on contact with foreign nationals. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Friday that the administration intended to resolve the current investigation "before we look more broadly," but he stressed that "the president has high regard for the agency."

"The Secret Service has stated quite clearly and the president believes that his security and the overall security of the trip was never compromised," Carney said.

The Defense Department, meanwhile, clarified Friday that 11 members of the U.S. military were also involved in the scandal, not 10, as had previously been reported.?

The service members span four branches of the military:

  • Six members of the Army's Special Forces.
  • Two Navy explosive ordnance disposal team members.
  • Two Marine dog handlers.
  • One airman.

The earlier reports included only five soldiers.

Following is the full Secret Service statement:

The Secret Service's comprehensive investigation into allegations of misconduct by its employees in Cartagena, Colombia continues.

In addition to the previously announced personnel actions, three additional employees have chosen to resign. ?

As a result of the ongoing investigation in Cartagena, a twelfth employee has been implicated. He has been placed on administrative leave and his security clearance has been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. ??One of the employees involved has been cleared of serious misconduct, but will face appropriate administrative action.

At this point, five employees continue to be on administrative leave and their security clearances remain suspended pending the outcome of this investigation."?

The Secret Service continues to conduct a full, thorough and fair investigation, utilizing all investigative techniques available to our agency. This includes polygraph examinations, interviews with the employees involved, and witness interviews, to include interviews being conducted by our Office of Professional Responsibility in Cartagena, Colombia.?

Since these allegations were first reported, the Secret Service has actively pursued this investigation, and has acted to ensure that appropriate action is affected. We demand that all of our employees adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards and are committed to a full review of this matter.

Veterans Dept. Will Increase Mental Health ... - Health and Fitness

The hiring, which would be augmented by the addition of 300 clerical workers, would increase the department?s mental health staff by nearly 10 percent at a time when the veterans health system is being overwhelmed not just by veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, but also by aging veterans from the Vietnam era.

?History shows that the costs of war will continue to grow for a decade or more after the operational missions in Iraq and Afghanistan have ended,? Eric K. Shinseki, the secretary of veterans affairs, said in a statement. ?As more veterans return home, we must ensure that all veterans have access to quality mental health care.?

The announcement comes as the department is facing intensified criticism for delays in providing psychological services to veterans at some of its major medical centers.

The department?s own inspector general is expected to release a report as soon as next week asserting that wait times for mental health services are significantly longer than the department has been willing to acknowledge.

Senator Patty Murray, a Washington Democrat who is chairwoman of the Senate Veterans? Affairs Committee, has also scheduled hearings next week about the delays.

And last year, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, based in San Francisco, issued a scathing ruling saying that the department had failed to provide adequate mental health services to veterans.

?No more veterans should be compelled to agonize or perish while the government fails to perform its obligation,? Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote for the majority. The Obama administration has appealed the ruling.

The Veterans Affairs Department says that it has worked hard to keep pace with the tide of new veterans needing psychological care, increasing its mental health care budget by 39 percent since 2009 and hiring more than 3,500 mental health professionals.

The department says it has also established a policy to do mental health evaluations of all veterans not in crisis within 14 days, a goal it says it meets 95 percent of the time.

However, the inspector general?s report is expected to question the validity of that claim.

One issue confronting the department has been finding enough mental health clinicians to fill job openings, particularly in rural areas. The director of veterans health care in Montana recently was reassigned, for instance, amid complaints that she had been unable to hire psychiatrists to staff a new psychiatric unit.

But department officials said they were confident that they would be able to find qualified mental health clinicians in most regions. Funds for the new jobs will be allocated out of the current department budget, the officials said, and clinicians will be added to all 21 of the department?s service networks.

The vast majority of the new hires, about 1,400, will be patient-care providers. But the department also plans to hire more than 100 people for a crisis hot line as well as 100 examiners to review disability compensation and pension claims.

That disability compensation system is struggling with a growing backlog, with nearly 900,000 veterans currently waiting for decisions on their claims.

Vanessa Williams Reveals She Had Abortion in High School

When Vanessa Williams' book You Have No Idea is aptly titled.

The candid memoir, penned with her mother and available in stores now, reveals shocking secrets about the Desperate Housewives star's earlier years.

Probably the darkest one is that she was molested by an 18-year-old girl when she was just 10 years old, while they were on a family trip with friends.

"It was definitely a choice, because it didn't need to be [in the book]," Williams recalls. "It happened one night where she told me, 'come over here.'"

Vanessa Williams Photo

"I didn't know that it was wrong, but I knew it wasn't right because I wasn't supposed to tell anybody." Years later, her mother was stunned to find out.

"[I] had no idea that, that had happened," Helen Williams said. "But in retrospect, it put into place some of her reactions during her pre-teen years."

Another surprising admission? Vanessa Williams, now a mother of four, said she first got pregnant in high school, but she decided to have an abortion.

This was another secret she kept from her mother.

"Being pregnant is the most frightening thing that happens in your life," said the former Miss America of her decision to end the pregnancy. "I knew in high school that's something that I was not prepared to do, or fight, or struggle with."

Rihanna Topless, Bikini Photos: Girl Gone Wild!

Another day, another revealing batch of Rihanna pics.

Posted by the 24-year-old singer herself, no less.

The star showed off pictures from her Hawaiian vacation via Facebook Monday, and in one image, she flings off her white bikini top while standing under a waterfall.

It's Rihanna topless. Further comment unnecessary.

A Rihanna Topless Pic

The Battleship actress says she doesn't actively work out, but just has an active lifestyle, swimming, horseback riding, hiking and such whenever she can.

"I'm not excited about how skinny I am, so it wasn't a goal for me or anything," she says of her thin frame. "That was not something I even tried to do."

Anyone out there complaining? No? Okay. Other sexy images include Rih playing with her bikini on the beach and descending into a shark tank. Enjoy.
