Trusts are becoming increasingly popular among people in the higher income brackets. These financial shelters can be used for estate planning, asset management and protection from creditors. Now, some experts are promoting the use of trusts as protective strategies during a high net worth divorce.

Trusts play an important role in property division. This is primarily because trust assets that are established before a marriage are generally considered separate property. Before women get married, they should consider locking away property and other large investments in a trust. This way, in the event of divorce, those holdings will be protected from the designs of the other person's divorce attorney.

For example, business owners would be well-served to establish trusts to protect their company assets. If this is not done, divorce proceedings may compromise the financial stability of your business. Entrepreneurs can protect their ventures by establishing businesses as separate holdings from the beginning.

In addition, some states prohibit trust holdings to be included in available assets when distributing alimony or child support. That is, trusts do not count as liquid assets that can be distributed as part of a court-ordered payment system. That has important implications because people who are beneficiaries of their parents' trust fund, for instance, cannot be penalized during court proceedings. The trust does not count as a holding for the recipient, so they can still receive the full amount of alimony from their ex-spouse.

Trusts are also beneficial because they prevent funds from being allocated to unintended beneficiaries. Putting the proper safeguards in place can protect the assets from your ex-spouse, creditors, post-divorce asset lawsuits and other nasty legal processes. What happens if you are sued because of your involvement in a car crash after divorce, for example? Many of your assets would be protected from predatory litigators if you secured them away in a trust.

Every high-asset divorce is different, but attorneys acknowledge that trusts can make the split easier by clearly defining which property belongs to each person.

Sharp to start shipping iPhone screens to Apple this month

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Sharp Corp. said it will start shipping screens destined for a new Apple iPhone that is widely expected to be released in October ahead of the pre-Christmas shopping season.

"Shipments will start in August," Sharp's new president, Takashi Okuda, said at a press briefing in Tokyo on Thursday after the company released its latest quarterly earnings.

He declined to give a more specific date for shipments beyond this month.

Apple is planning a major product launch on Sept 12, stoking speculation that the world's most valuable technology company will announce the sale of its redesigned iPhone. Sharp, identified as a supplier by Apple last year, is one of three companies expected to build the screens for the latest Apple offering.

The other two suppliers of the panels are LG Display Co Ltd and Japan Display Inc.

Apple is equipping the next iPhone with a larger screen after Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest Galaxy smartphone with a 4.8-inch touch-screen.

Sources earlier told Reuters that the panels will be 4 inches corner to corner -- 30 percent bigger than current iPhones.

Samsung last month posted a record operating profit of $5.9 billion for the quarter ended June, helped by sales of its latest handset.

The iPhone screens will also be thinner than their previous incarnations with the use of so-called in-cell panels. The new technology embeds touch sensors into the liquid crystal display, eliminating the touch-screen layer found in current iPhones.

Samsung and Apple on Tuesday faced off at the start of a high-stakes patent trial, where Apple has accused Samsung of stealing iPhone features like scrolling and multi-touch.

Lt. John Pike, the UC Davis police officer who became a focal point of last November?s pepper-spraying incident during a campus protest, is no longer employed by the university, a spokesman confirmed late Tuesday. UC Davis spokesman Barry Shiller said he could not discuss the details of Pike?s departure, but in response to queries from The Bee, he said Pike was no longer employed there as of Tuesday?

Pike, 39, declined to comment when reached by The Bee as he was sitting in a meeting on campus where he said he was being terminated.

Pike?s 2010 salary was listed as $110,243.12. He has been on paid leave since the debacle unfolded last year, sparking worldwide outrage, numerous investigations and calls for the resignation of UC Davis leaders?

Pike?s future had remained in limbo until now, and at one point he faced harassment that included a barrage of 10,000 text messages, 17,000 emails and numerous items being ordered delivered to his home.

That backlash led, in part, to a judge?s order that the names of other officers involved in the incident not be revealed, an order that is currently the subject of a legal battle between the Federated University Police Officers Association and lawyers for The Bee and the Los Angeles Times.

The university, Pike and other officers have since been sued by students who say they were victims of the pepper-spraying. The Yolo County District Attorney?s Office is still reviewing the matter to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.

On the other coast, NYMag reports that Deputy Inspector Tony Bologna won?t suffer alone:

Last week a report from civil liberties experts at NYU, Fordham, Harvard, and Stanford confirmed what anyone who followed Occupy Wall Street had already concluded: Police were far too rough with protesters. Two protesters already filed a lawsuit in February against the city and NYPD Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna, whose liberal use of pepper spray was caught on film and widely circulated on YouTube. Today three more protesters filed lawsuits, but in addition to monetary damages they?re hoping to force the NYPD to change its policies on the use of force during demonstrations?

Following the initial complaints about Bologna, he offered a questionable excuse, lost some vacation time, and was reassigned to Staten Island. Plus, in what may be the most serious punishment, the city is also letting him pay his own legal fees related to the lawsuits filed in February. (There?s no word yet on whether the same goes for the new complaints.)...

Taylor says that his clients are seeking monetary damages ?as anyone would seek if they were wrongfully pepper-sprayed,? but their primary goal is changing the way the NYPD operates. ?Ray Kelly isn?t going to do it, the mayor isn?t going to do it, so we?re asking the courts to step in,? says Taylor. They want to see more judicial supervision of the department?s response to protests and held off on filing the suits partially so they?d have the experts? report to bolster their claim. The city has already ignored numerous calls to create an inspector general?s office to review its policies, but with new suits filed and the report?s authors threatening to ask the Department of Justice to investigate their findings, it seems that the era of asking the NYPD to do a better job of policing itself may be over.

Why the U.S. military won't be building Batman's flying 'Bat'

When the Dark Knight rises to defend Gotham once more, he literally takes to the skies in a flying vehicle known simply as the Bat. The new nonlethal weapon in Batman's arsenal can hover like a helicopter and pull off aerial maneuvers worthy of "Top Gun" fighter jets ? a combination that may seem almost too good to be true.

That amazing spectacle should come as no surprise in a Hollywood film about a billionaire superhero with access to top-secret military technology. But making the Bat fly in today's reality would prove a lot trickier, said Mitchell Burnside Clapp, a program manager for the U.S. military's?Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency?(DARPA).

"The problem with a vehicle like the Bat is that it's going to have to generate enough thrust to hold itself off the ground," Burnside Clapp said. "The main thrust appears to come from the belly rotor while the other devices seem to be applied more to maneuvering."

Burnside Clapp looks to the future of aircraft technology as manager for DARPA's Disc-Rotor Compound Helicopter program. He previously served as an Air Force Reserve instructor at the U.S.?Air Force Test Pilot School?and worked at several private aerospace companies. In this case, he has also seen "The Dark Knight Rises" (Warning: plot spoilers ahead; no character spoilers).

Making the Bat fly
Downward thrust from the Bat's belly rotor must at least equal the weight of the Bat to achieve the hover effect, Burnside Clapp explained. Helicopters create such lift by having long rotor blades extending well beyond the main aircraft body ? the blade sections close to the main rotor hub do not create much lift because they don't move very fast relative to the air.

But helicopter lift also depends on accelerating air downward through their spinning rotor blades. That becomes a problem if the rotor sits underneath an aircraft such as the Bat (although Lucius Fox, Batman's gadgets master in the Christopher Nolan film trilogy, mutters something about solving air recirculation issues in the Bat's design).

Putting the main rotor beneath the Bat also leads to some stability problems ? "think of the problem of balancing a broomstick on your palm" to get an idea, Burnside Clapp told InnovationNewsDaily. By comparison, rotors act as a restoring force for stability when they sit on top of helicopters. [V-22 Osprey: Controversial Dream Machine]

Assuming the Bat weighs about as much as modern helicopters, the Bat's rotor would still need to have "enough air to push a several thousand pound vehicle upwards," Burnside Clapp said. Such force would easily knock a standing person down, which would have changed certain "Dark Knight Rises" scenes in a fairly dramatic fashion.

Leaping the technology gap
Still, some technologies could make hovering vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft work in the confined urban canyons of Batman's Gotham City. Shrouded rotors distributed around the Bat vehicle could prevent the downwash from flattening everyone around it, Burnside Clapp said.

Enough power can make almost anything fly (maybe even a prohibitively expensive?flying aircraft carrier). Helicopters represent a power-efficient way of providing lift, followed by the less efficient "vectored thrust" aircraft such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

By comparison, the Bat's unusual design would lead to huge power demands ? but perhaps not unsolvable demands, according to the technological leaps of fancy in "The Dark Knight Rises."

"The Bat, in the film, would need an unbelievable amount of power," Burnside Clapp said. "Now if you had a?fusion reactor?big enough to power a city that was small enough that you could carry it around in a medium truck, then ?"
