Carnival mood in South Africa as ANC celebrates centenary

Dancing supporters spilled outside the 45,000-seater Bloemfontein stadium in South Africa to mark the centenary.

They celebrated as a dozen African leaders, including South Africa?s president and ANC leader Jacob Zuma, lit a flame at the church in the central city where the party formed in 1912.

Dozens of buses lined up to drop off celebrants waiting for an afternoon address by Mr Zuma who said the ANC, which has been in power for the past 18 years, would rule ?until Jesus comes?.

Nelson Mandela, 93, who became the country?s first black president in 1994, was absent because of his frail health.

But the day was tinged with sadness over the ANC?s failure to tackle unemployment and corruption scandals that have embroiled its members.

In the town of Clarens, 257km (160 miles) away, protesters demanding basic services, such as tap water, reportedly stoned buses carrying ANC supporters.
