The evolution of Apple in a 3 minute (fan made) video

Apple may have made a few clangers in the past, with the most recent one angering a lot of die hard fans, but one?thing's?for sure: their products usually?center?around?that?person's?life due to the nature of the devices they bring to market.?

The?enthusiasm?for newer, shinier stuff from Apple also never seems to get old either, and on that note, enter Apple fan August Brandels who contacted us with a video he made (sort of)?chronologically showing the evolution of Apple and their products over the years; the segments are cut from various Apple commercials and promotional videos, and tied to a great soundtrack that also leaves you feeling pretty good for a Sunday morning!

So if you have around 4 minutes to spare, and want to see Apple as a fan would, check out the above video and drop a comment.

Thanks to Brandals for sending it our way, and oh, he was also featured on TechCrunch for it too. Not bad.

SquareTrade: Americans Have Spent Nearly $6B On iPhone Repair And Replacement Since 2007

SquareTrade_Infographics_FinalSquareTrade, a company that provides warranty repairs for consumer electronics, revealed in a report today that Americans have spent an approximate cumulative total of $5.9 billion on damaged iPhones since the device's introduction in 2007. That includes the cost of repairs, replacement iPhones, and insurance deductibles for plans like the warranties SquareTrade offers, and in large part, costs incurred are a result of accidental damage, more so than loss or theft. The survey claims that just during the past year, more than 30 percent of iPhone owners have?damaged?their device, and repeat?occurrences?are fairly common: 17 percent have damaged their devices more than once. Younger iPhone owners tend to be the most accident-prone, according to the results, with one in two iPhone users 35 or under experiencing some kind of accident with their devices.

Sesame Street's next chapter: Elmo talks back

NEW YORK (AP) ? Elmo, Big Bird and the rest of the "Sesame Street" crew have always talked to kids. Now, they'll try to have a two-way conversation with their pint-sized audience using Kinect, the motion and voice-sensing controller created by Microsoft.

"Kinect Sesame Street TV," out Tuesday, is not exactly a video game, though it runs on the Xbox 360 video game system. There are no winners and losers, no real rules to follow and no points to score. If you don't want to play, that's fine. Just sit back and watch "Sesame Street," as kids have for the past 43 years. But if you do play, Grover will count coconuts you've thrown, the Count will praise you for standing still and Elmo will catch a talking ball if you throw it to him.

The episodes presage the next step in the evolution of television, adding an interactive element to what's still a passive, lean-back experience. The game is sure to arouse jealous feelings among football fans who yell at their TV sets during Sunday's game. As you watch children playing the "Sesame Street" game, it's easy to imagine a not-so-distant future where viewers become participants, affecting a show's outcome ?much more than they do when they vote for "American Idol" contestants.

"Kinect Sesame Street" ''allows the child to participate in the narrative plot," says Emory Woodard, communications professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. Woodard, who worked at Children's Television Workshop ? what is now Sesame Workshop ? in 1995, notes that a lot of TV programming aimed at preschoolers involves characters talking to the kids. "But in this case," he adds, "The characters can react to the child's response."

It's not entirely clear, though, whether that makes a difference to them.

"That's a research question to explore," Woodard says.

Two-and 3-year-olds, he notes, are at a very "ego-centric" stage of development. They already experience on-screen characters as if they were talking to them, even with traditional television programs. They start growing out of that around 4, but by 5 they'll have more or less grown out of "Sesame Street," too. ("Kinect Sesame" is recommended for children 3 and up).

Microsoft recently gave The Associated Press and several bloggers an early look at "Kinect Sesame." Jack and Zoe Shyba, the 5 and 4-year-old kids of mommy blogger Jessica Shyba, at first just watched the show intently when they saw it at the Sesame Workshop in New York. The letter of the day, as it happens, was "S." But as soon the characters started to ask them to do things, they obliged.

Kinect works by first calibrating to users' bodies so it can track their movements when they throw a virtual ball to an on-screen character or pluck virtual carrots from Elmo's garden. (Kinect is also used to play more traditional video games and control entertainment features on the Xbox). With teenagers and adults, this means moving your body into various poses that are reflected by a bare-bones figure on screen.

With small children as the focus, the creators tried a different approach. Instead of having an on-screen avatar mimic their movements, "Kinect Sesame Street" has them step into an on-screen mirror so they can see themselves on TV.

"We were spending a lot of time talking about how to get a kid calibrated in a way that was fun," said Josh Atkins, Xbox executive producer of Kinect Sesame Street. The best way, it turned out, was to have an on-screen "character" that is essentially a mirror. "When they see themselves on TV they tend to pay attention."

"Sesame Street" first aired on public television in 1969, with the aim of educating preschoolers and helping them transition to school. "Kinect Sesame Street TV" starts off by using content from the show's 42nd season. The game is available in disc form and as a download through via Xbox Live. For $30 users can purchase a package that includes eight 30-minute episodes on two discs. Users can also purchase single episodes for $5.

Rosemarie Truglio, senior vice president of education and research at Sesame Workshop, said children can learn both through linear content ? such as watching an episode ? and through interactive content.

"We have never tried this," she said. "We've never taken a 'Sesame Street' episode and turned it into an interactive experience."

Truglio points to a math example. There's a scene in the show where Grover slips on a banana peel and drops a box of coconuts. Kids who don't want to interact with Grover can continue watching the show. Or, they can stand up and throw virtual coconuts back to Grover, who will count out the pitches until he gets six. At the Sesame Workshop, Jack and Zoe mimicked throwing the coconuts and counted with Grover until they got all of them.

"We want to get children to understand what '5' is, or the meaning of what '6' is," Truglio said. "They have to throw 6 times (so) you have an action that is linked to a number."

This kind of "transfer" ? learning something in one context and translating it to another context, is a "holy grail" for Sesame Street, said Fran Blumberg, professor at Fordham University's graduate school of education who focuses on educational psychology.

"Sesame has been wildly successful," she says, "The question is whether it will be enhanced with this new game."

Jessica Shyba (who blogs about parenting in Manhattan at MommasGoneCity.com), said she prefers to see her kids play the game rather than watching regular TV.

"If they watch TV I can't even ask them what they want for lunch," she says, noting that passive television viewing turns them into "little zombies." But with the interactive game, Shyba says, "I can hear them talking, yelling, waving their arms. That, to me, is really cool."

Atkins said the making of "Kinect Sesame Street" involved a lot of real-world testing with children. It was through trial and error that the designers learned that it didn't work well when characters gave children very direct orders like "throw the ball" or "throw the ball now." The children in early tests became resistant and didn't feel involved in the story. So they changed the timing. In the game, Elmo waits for kids to throw and says "please." He's also careful not to ask too many times, because kids can get overwhelmed and lose interest.

Unlike a video game, in "Kinect Sesame Street" kids never need to do anything unless they want to. But if they do, the designers' rule was that "there needs to be an immediate response," Atkins said.

It was also crucial to only ask kids to do simple actions that are part of their everyday vocabulary. In Sesame, this includes jumping, throwing, waving, pointing, clapping, standing and perhaps the most challenging task for some of them, standing still.

"We came up with those things because we knew they were things we would never have to explain to a child," he said.

Sesame also doesn't tell kids they are wrong, or that they have to do something over. If that happened, Atkins said, "It would stop being a TV show and revert back to being a game."

Shyba's only concern is "Kinect Sesame Street" relatively short shelf life.

Navigating Kinect requires some basic skills that might be difficult for young children. Zoe, who turns 4 on Wednesday, hasn't quite mastered the setup but even she "kind of feels like 'Sesame Street' is babyish," Shyba said. "Granted, she has an older brother."

At 5, Jack is all but over "Sesame," and much more interested in another interactive TV-game, based on nature shows from National Geographic. "Kinect Nat Geo TV," another Xbox offering out this week, lets kids take the shape of on-screen animals, look for their tracks in the snow or take photos of them by saying the word "snap" when they appear.

"This kind of interactive programming is going to really be a significant part of the entertainment experience of children, teens and adults," Woodard said. "We are just at the beginning."

PFT: NFL sides with Bucs in kneel-down fracas

Tennessee Titans v San Diego ChargersGetty Images

It was the kind of day Junior Seau would have loved.

The Chargers, in front of a sold-out stadium, hammered the Titans 38-10. They also retired the late linebacker?s number 55 in an emotional ceremony, with fans chanting his name as team president Dean Spanos presented his family with a framed jersey.

The team wore 55 stickers on the back of their helmets to remember him, and defensive tackle Antonio Garay even had a picture of Seau shaved into the back of his head.

?I thought it was quite an atmosphere today,? Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said, via Tom Krasovic of U-T San Diego. ?It was awesome. And obviously putting that sticker on your helmet means something.

?I?m sure he?d have loved to be a part of this one.?

It?s only the third number retired by the Chargers, along with Lance Alworth?s 19 and Dan Fouts? 14.

Fouts spoke at the pregame ceremony before, hailing Seau?s leadership.

?He had it ? all of the ?it? qualities that make up a great leader,? Fouts said. ?He was the ultimate leader on the field for the Chargers for 13 great years and an equally great leader in our San Diego community. . . .

?There is no one more deserving than our friend Junior.?

Chargers coach Norv Turner was emotional as he talked about Seau, who died in May of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. But the circumstances of his death didn?t cloud the respect shown for him, as many talked about his spirit and the way he approached the game.

?Our guys have so much respect for Junior,? Turner said. ?Just a remarkable individual. If you?re going to say, here?s a football player, I don?t know if you could build one that?s better than Junior Seau. He was an inspirational guy to be around ? not Sundays, I?m talking about a day to day basis, six in the morning, last one to leave in the evening, flying around in practice like it was a game, and it was contagious for everybody.?

Those are the things they?ll remember, and the reason no Charger should wear 55 again.

Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban Named New 'American Idol' Judges

NEW YORK ? The "American Idol" judges' panel is now complete with the naming of singer-rapper Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban.

The Fox network officially tapped the pair with an announcement Sunday, confirming rumors surrounding them both just hours before the first round of auditions for next season was due to begin in New York.

The announcement also settled the status of Randy Jackson. He will stay put as the sole remaining original "Idol" judge, scotching rumors he might assume a different role on the popular talent competition.

This trio will join pop star Mariah Carey at a judges' panel now expanded to four members from its previous three.

Arriving at Lincoln Center, where the auditions would take place, Urban hailed "Idol" for its "great history of producing real stars."

As an "Idol" judge, he said he plans to be "authentic" but not cruel.

"I did similar shows when I was very young in Australia," he recalled, "and I was sort of crucified by one judge. So I don't know that I'll ever be THAT guy."

Minaj said during the auditions she'll be looking for "a superstar," which, she explained, is "something that can't be defined in words."

Jackson called this pair of hires a "fresh, fresh, fresh `Idol' one-two!"

Minaj, he said, "brings a whole other cool vibe we've never had on the show, and Keith Urban? My God, he's unbelievably talented!"

When Carey was asked whether she had eagerly awaited news of who would join her as judges, she cracked that, no, she hadn't, "because all I really care about is me," but quickly added, "Only kidding."

Turning serious, she said she didn't know what kind of judge she would be.

"Am I the mean one? Am I the nice one? ... It's not about me, me, me, it's about them (the contestants) and what I can bring to them to help guide them in the right direction," said Carey.

Ryan Seacrest will remain as host when the show returns for its 12th season in January.

"Last night," he said, "we had a chance to really get together for the first time as a group. Everybody made a toast and talked about how special it was that they were here, and why they were here. So we're off to a good start."

Seacrest took note of "the serious and obvious diversity on this panel," adding, "You can see just by the panel the kind of power the show has."

The makeup of the panel has been in flux since Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announced their exits in July. Carey signed on later that month.

"I am thrilled about this year's judges panel," said Mike Darnell, Fox president of Alternative Entertainment. "With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan, we've put together one of the most exciting judging panels around."

"Idol" is looking for its famous new faces to supercharge a show that remains a ratings leader but has seen its viewership and pop-culture clout erode in recent seasons in an increasingly crowded talent show field. Besides Fox sibling "The X Factor," which recently added Britney Spears and Demi Lovato as judges, there's NBC's "The Voice," which boasts Christina Aguilera among its big names.

Minaj, 29, is known for her colorful hairstyles, wardrobe and antics. A native of Trinidad who grew up in New York, she has scored with hits like "Starships," "Turn Me On," and "Super Bass," her seventh single, which has sold more than 4 million copies.

She is the first female solo artist to have seven singles simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She released her second studio album, "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded," in April, and since then it has sold 1 million copies worldwide.

The 44-year-old Urban has four Grammy Awards and 14 No. 1 hits, and was named Male Vocal Artist of the Year three times, as well as Entertainer of the Year, by the Country Music Association. His latest CD, "Get Closer," has produced three consecutive No. 1 singles.

The New Zealand native is married to Australia-born film star Nicole Kidman.

"American Idol" ended the 2011-12 season as the leading entertainment show and No. 2 overall, just behind NBC's top-rated "Sunday Night Football."

But the show aired its least-watched finale ever and the advertiser-favored young adult audience has been steadily shrinking. The show's cachet hasn't been helped by a run of champions who have failed to achieve the career sizzle of past competitors Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson.

PFT: Patriots may not have Hernandez for 6 weeks

Detroit Lions v San Francisco 49ersGetty Images

The handshake was anti-climactic, a civil exchange that wouldn?t have been worth mentioning without the context.

It was the bludgeoning Jim Harbaugh?s guys gave Jim Schwartz?s on the field that made this one noteworthy.

The 49ers pounded the Lions into submission in prime time, sending a message that they?re still going to win games by being more physical than your side.

The 49ers ran for 148 yards in a 27-19 win over the Lions, with Frank Gore looking like a young man again and pacing the offense.

They also held a potent offense to four Jason Hanson field goals for the meaningful 58 minutes, bullying the Lions at the line of scrimmage.

It?s become fashionable to say it?s a passing league, as if minimizing old ways takes away their effectiveness. But the two most dominant-looking teams of the day were the 49ers and the Texans, who get it done in the old style.

You might not want to watch it every week, but when it?s executed well, it?s still an impressive thing to watch.

Here are five more things we learned on Sunday Night Football:

1. Alex Smith has grown beyond being compared to a Trent Dilfer-style handler, whose only job is to not screw it up.

He makes plays occasionally, and he even bled for good measure. Those third-down conversions late were beautifully designed and beautifully executed.

But the beauty of Smith in this offense isn?t what he does, it?s what they don?t bother asking him to do, and him being OK with that.

He?s got an average arm, but makes up for it by throwing (and not throwing) at the right time.

He?s a prime example of the fit being more important than the talent, and he and Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman fit together perfectly.

They could do different things with a better player, but Smith has also grown to the point where they?re able to work with him.

2. The Lions are missing something on offense.

It?s easy to pin it on suspended running back Mikel Leshoure, who will return next week.

But if not him, it needs to be someone. They need some degree of balance, and the cast of characters they?re using at the moment (Kevin Smith, Joique Bell) aren?t getting it done.

Leshoure would probably suffice. In a perfect world, they could use him in tandem with Jahvid Best, still on the PUP list because of his post-concussion issues. Best?s ability as a pass-catcher out of the backfield would be especially useful on third down, where the Lions struggled so much early.

3. Harbaugh can talk about No. 1 receivers all he wants. It?s his fullbacks and tight ends that make his offense go.

Vernon Davis is a matchup nightmare, and not just for the Lions. I?m not sure (short of a young Dennis Rodman) who is capable of covering this guy.

But Delanie Walker?s role as the move tight end/fullback shouldn?t be overlooked.? He doesn?t turn up in box scores often, but he?s excellent at rooting out linebackers.

He had a number of tooth-rattling blocks that made Frank Gore look faster than he really is, and rarely gets mention. Consider this a small step toward catching up.

4. Speaking of which, Randy Moss gets a lot of credit from opposing defensive backs. Why is another question.

He had four catches for 47 yards and a score last week, one for 14 against the Lions.

This isn?t the Moss that can knock the top off a defense, but they sure play him that way when he?s on the field.

5. Matt Stafford is a very good quarterback.

Matt Stafford threw some very bad balls.

His first half pick was quacking before Dashon Goldson got his hands on it, and he threw a few in the dirt as well. He also locks onto Calvin Johnson to the exclusion of other targets.

Maybe it was windy, or maybe the 49ers forced him to look more erratic than he actually is. Either way, he did not leave this one looking good.

Avoid new legal risk - Business Management Daily

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has jurisdiction over Florida employers, has approved new grounds for discrimination lawsuits. It recently ruled that employees who file discrimination complaints can sue for retaliation if their employers punish them with a hostile work environment.

The 11th Circuit was the final federal circuit to approve this cause of action.

Essentially, the ruling makes it illegal to engage in a campaign to get an employee to quit because she filed a discrimination complaint.

Recent case: When Diane and several other doctors working for the Department of Veterans Affairs filed internal EEO complaints, they soon found themselves on the receiving end of what they perceived as character assassination, interference with their research activities and other hostile acts.

They sued and won in a jury trial. The VA appealed, arguing that the 11th Circuit never recognized a retaliatory hostile work environment.

But the 11th Circuit said that it finally did, joining the other federal circuits. It upheld the jury decision in this case. (Gowski, et al., v. Shinseki, No. 09-16371, 11th Cir., 2012)

What employers must do: Be sure to cover the concept of retaliatory hostile work environment in your supervisor training. Explain that making life miserable for an employee?even if not accompanied by a concrete action like termination or demotion?may be retaliation. After a discrimination complaint has been resolved, remind supervisors that you won?t tolerate any form of retaliation.

How to Boil Water without Bubbles

A coating has been found to help hot metal hang onto a protective vapor layer that prevents explosive boiling

boiling Coating helps hot metal hang onto protective vapor layer that prevents explosive boiling Image: Patankar - 11418

By Katharine Sanderson of Nature magazine

One trick to test whether a frying pan is hot enough is to sprinkle water on it. If the surface is sufficiently above the boiling point of water, droplets will skip across the pan. Those jittery beads of water are held up from the hot pan by a cushion of steam. The vapour cushion collapses as the surface falls below the 'Leidenfrost temperature', causing furious bubbling and spitting when the water droplet hits the surface and boils explosively.

The Leidenfrost effect lies behind the discovery, published today in Nature, that water can be made to boil without any bubbling if a surface is specially treated so that the vapour cushion does not break down. The key is to make the surface very water-repellent, according to Ivan Vakarelski, an engineer at the Clean Combustion Research Center at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, and his colleagues. The effect might be used to carefully control how metals are cooled and heated, or to reduce drag on ships.

The rough with the smooth
Vakarelski?s team covered metal spheres with a commercially available coating that made the surface rough and strongly water-repellent, and heated these superhydrophobic spheres to 400 ?C (any higher and the coating would deteriorate). For comparison, they heated a set of smooth, water-attracting spheres to 700 ?C.

Each hot sphere was dropped into room-temperature water, where a layer of water vapour formed around it. The vapour layers around the water-loving spheres quickly collapsed, leading to explosive bubbling. The coated spheres, by contrast, kept their vapour layers as they cooled down, with no bubbling or explosive boiling.

?We thought we could improve the transition? from the Leidenfrost regime to bubbling, says Vakarelski, ?but we are not only lowering the transition, we are completely avoiding it?.

?It was really dramatic,? says Neelesh Patankar, a theoretical mechanical engineer at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and a co-author of the paper. ?As the temperature goes down, this vapour phase nicely settles down.?

The implications of the work could be far-reaching, says Vincent Craig, an applied mathematician at the Australian National University in Canberra, who studies the physics of surface forces and bubbles. ?They?ve shown that by keeping the surface rough you can keep that vapour layer at low temperature.? The effect could be used to reduce drag on surfaces such as the tiny channels in microfluidic devices, he suggests.

Hot stuff
In a related experiment, the team dipped metal rods with the same water-loving and water-hating surfaces into water. Heaters inside the rods warmed them, while probes monitored their temperature. The water-loving rods could only ever reach 106 ?C, because the water was always coming into contact with the metal and cooling it. But the coated spheres got up to 250 ?C, because they were constantly protected from the cool water by the vapour layer.

The next step, says Patankar, is to try to get the vapour layer to form at temperatures much lower than the boiling point of water. Water can exist as either liquid or vapour at room temperature, but it requires energy to stay in the vapour state. Patankar thinks that a surface could be designed that would make the vapour state more stable. A coating could then be used to form a vapour layer round a ship?s hull to reduce drag or discourage organisms such as algae or barnacles from attaching themselves to the ship, he suggests. ?It will be mind-blowing,? says Patankar. ?Who thinks of getting a vapour without heating??

The 10 Commandments of the Internet Age | E RADAR | Smarter ...

Brazil is close to passing the world?s first?Internet Bill of Rights.?The?Marco Civil da Internet?aims to guarantee basic protections?for internet users, and is considered a major step forward for online law.

In development since 2009, the civil regulatory framework?was created through?public consultation?and has undergone many changes, eventually reaching the Brazilian Chamber this year.

The Bill has catapulted Brazil to a?progressive position?in digital policymaking,?potentially serving?as?a model for other countries trying to balance user rights?against interests of online companies and law enforcement.
?
The crucial vote will take place in Brazil?s Congress on 19 September.

With such wide participation from Brazil?s population, it is expected that some would criticize and some would support the initiative. Many are in favour of the final version of the Bill of Rights.

Yet, despite such support, the bill still divides opinions. While the majority seems to support passing of the bill, some position themselves against it, because of the broad freedom that Marco Civil brings to the Internet.

The proposal would mean service providers (such as Youtube, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook) would not have any responsibility over the content being uploaded by their users, and wouldn?t be able to remove content ? even if offensive ? without a warrant, because such attitude is seen as a violation of freedom of expression. Professor Marcelo Thompson, from the University of Hong Kong,?explains:

?If the online service provider knows with certainty it is hosting content crudely offensive to someone?s privacy, sexual orientation, children?s rights, you name it, and does nothing about it ? actually, even if the provider explicitly acknowledges the offensive nature of the content, even if it acts out of sheer cruelty in leaving things as they stand ?, its conduct will not carry any liability whatsoever.?

Criticism

But critics think that the proposed law violates Brazilian rights of security and response of anonymity and defends the exemption of liability providers, thus making the Internet ?lawless?.?The Constitution of Brazil establishes that the expression of thought is free and anonymity forbidden.

Telecommunications companies and the copyright industry are also strongly lobbying the Chamber of Representatives to put a hold on the Internet Bill of Rights because the issue of net neutrality is included in the Bill.

US Digital Bill of Rights

Meanwhile in the US, Republican?Rep. Darrell Issa, is stoking an online debate on what a potential ?Digital Citizens? Bill of Rights? could look like.

He posted his proposed Bill?on Madison, a collaborative bill-editing site and users have been ?making edits and revisions to it. It?s a neat work in progress as people collaborate and try to define those rights that we hold dear online, in a way that can be protected from a potentially over-zealous government.

The US government is responding to entreaties from major corporations (i.e.?The Recording Industry Association of America),who are seeking more tools to protect themselves against online users who are peddling counterfeit goods or pirated digital content. But many worry the government powers would be too extensive, allowing law enforcement to shut down websites and blogs that display potentially infringing content.

Issa?s Bill sets out ten important rights for online users? as so to our Ten Commandments
?
